PEST PREVENTION FIELD GUIDE
Cockroaches: find hiding places and reduce infestations
Cockroaches thrive where they can find food, moisture, and narrow shelter. Different species require different responses, so identification and early intervention matter.
Clues to look for
Look for live insects at night, pepper-like droppings, egg cases, shed skins, and activity near appliances, cupboards, plumbing, or warm damp areas.
Practical first steps
- Keep food sealed; clean crumbs and grease under appliances, behind cookers, and along cabinet edges.
- Repair leaks, reduce condensation, take out rubbish often, and remove cardboard clutter.
- Document where and when you see insects so a qualified technician can identify hotspots and species.
What to avoid
Avoid total-release foggers, mixing insecticides, or spraying food-preparation surfaces. Improvised treatments may add exposure without eliminating hidden populations.
When to contact a professional
Contact a licensed pest professional when you see multiple cockroaches, evidence of breeding, or recurring activity. In multi-unit buildings, notify the property manager because treatment may need coordination.
Public-health and pesticide safety resources
Consult Health Canada's pest-control tips and your local public-health authority. If using a pesticide in Canada, confirm that it is registered with a Pest Control Products (PCP) registration number for the intended pest and location, and follow its full label directions.
